:Crafting Historical Arguments from Historical Evidence

During Advanced Placement World History this year, in the area of Historical Argumentation I learned the ability to define and make a question about the past and make a solid argument about it. I had to show full understanding about how events that happened our world today. I demonstrated this through March Madness. In March Madness we were assigned a leader in history and we went debating against other leaders on whether who had a greater impact in the world at that time. I had to research information about our leader on the internet looking through videos, essays, and biographies to have a solid argument on why my leader was better and what made my opponent worst.

Evidence:

Below on the picture on the left shows the packet with all the leaders and debates in March Madness and on the right is my debate paper about my leader which was Louis XIV. March Madness helped me make an argument and using it to win my debate.

: Chronological Reasoning

In APWH, I learned to identify, analyze, and evaluate continuity and change over time. I mastered this skill by writing the Continuity and Change Over Time in China from 1900-2000. I was able to write this essay easier because Mr. Rodriquez thought us the Chinese Dynasty song which helped me memorize what happened in China from 1900-2000. The Chinese Dynasty song also helped me on my AP test because the Dynasty song helped me know what happened in China in six periods and from there i could make a connection to know what happened in other regions at that point in time.

Evidence:

On the pictures below I have my CCOT in which the Chinese Dynasty song came in handy and my timeline of important events that happened in China from 1900-2000 which assisted me in writing my CCOT essay. The CCOT essay shows that I learned to memorize time periods and write in chronological order.

:Comparison and Contextualization

In APWH this year in the skill of comparison, I had a lot of practice because we wrote many comparison essays throughout  the year. I had to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between different regions and eras. One essay that really shows my understanding in this skill was the comparison essay between the Neolithic Revolution and the Industrial Revolution. What really helped me write this essay was using spice. Spice stands fro Social, Political, Interaction, Cultural, and Economic. Spice helped me compare the Neolithic Revolution with the Industrial Revolution by categorizing the information I knew and organizing my thoughts better. For example a similarity I wrote about was that both revolutions led to growth in urban centers and a difference was in the Neolithic Revolution they had stone tools vs steel and iron in the Industrial Revolution.

Evidence:

In the pictures below on the left I have my comparison essay about the Neolithic Revolution and the Industrial Revoulution and on the right is the prompt to that essay. This essay show that I could compare a topic in various aspects from spice.

:Historical Interpretation and Synthesis

In this thinking skill I learned to describe, analyze, evaluate, and create diverse interpretations of the past. For example in the Document Based Question (DBQ) I had to analyze the point of view from the person who wrote the document and I had to interpret what the document was saying in my own words. Also I had to describe a additional document that would help the reader understand the document better. For this specific thinking skill I actually used all the other three thinking skills combined because on a DBQ I had to write about how China responded to the spread of Buddhism. Here is where Historical Causation from HTS-2 helped me in HTS-4 because if I knew periods of time I would know Buddhism was founded in India in the six century B.C.E. and by the first century B.C.E. it was spread to China.

Evidence:

On the pictures below on the left I have the DBQ prompt about China's reaction towards the spread of Buddhism and on the right I have a picture of one of the documents about how they accepted Buddhism. The DBQ shows that I could interpret docuements and figure out their point of view to group them and summarize them.
